New PJs for Pete

Suffice it to say, it was time to replace Peter's holey PJs. He refers to them as 'house pants' most days, but since they are soft flannel and covered with red and blue skiers (getting pretty good air, I might add), I call them PJs. They suited him somehow, but the increasing thinness at the back was getting a little weird.

So, last week I pulled out a navy blue piece of fabric I just happen to have waiting in my box of fabric and an old McCall's pattern for pyjamas and night shirts (remember those, Graham?). The cutting out part was okay but since we don't have a kitchen or dining room table, I was cutting it out on the floor. Good thing I manage to make it to yoga class once in a while!

Wednesday evening I pulled out the trusty Singer Golden Touch'n'Sew machine that I inherited from my mother a number of years ago when she got a fancy new Bernina machine, and set it up in the kitchen. Before I could start sewing, I wanted to figure out which kind of seam would be best for the PJs. In the end I decided to do straight seams and pink the edges. So today I set up the iron and ironing board and started to sew! I was looking forward to this part and planned to have it put together in an hour or so. So far so good.

However, it was taking more time than I expected (go figure), what with all the pinning and unpinning, then there's the ironing the seams flat. Oh, and of course, pinking the seam allowances! So after a tea break, I went back at it. Then the machine started acting funny. It would keep running on after I released the foot peddle and wouldn't let me turn the handle manually. I fiddled around with it a bit and then ran out of bobbin thread. After I replaced the bobbin, it was never the same. I couldn't go for more than an inch without a big jam of thread on the underside and the fabric feed wouldn't go anywhere. So, after the dinner break, I called Mary Jane and asked to borrow her machine tonight. I hope to finish the PJs on Sunday.

Looks like the old Golden Touch'n'Sew may have to be retired!

Do I remember???

I'm wearing the night shirt right now!!!

Seriously, I still have it. It's a little thread-bare too.

When's the fashion show?
